Speaker 1:

Should business cards just die and fall into obscurity?

Speaker 2:

Welcome to Next Time. Welcome to the FitLife Show, where we share tips and tricks on fitness, food, family and fun.

Speaker 1:

What was that? What was that?

Speaker 3:

I didn't want to hit the mic and I was like, oh crap, we got a clap.

Speaker 2:

Well, business cards have been around for very, very, very, very long time, but there are new alternatives to just the ordinary business card Things like DOT we have an example right here for FitBodyism Limited that you can just scan with your phone, and things like that, or tap it, or tap it. There's also little dots that you can have actually on your phone, that you can just hold up to other phones and it be scanned, which I have. One of those too. What do you think, though? What do you think about business cards?

Speaker 3:

I would say. Being in business for 20 plus years, I've watched business cards evolve and I've been a part of business groups that use business cards. My personal take on business cards is like it sounds like a great idea, you know what I mean Like giving people a business card, but what I find is the return on a business card. Now, granted, they've come way down in price, but the return on a business card is very small, and the reason I say that is because you've got the bullets in post. Okay, so great publication. You know all that kind of jazz, gz, jazz.

Speaker 3:

He's at an event, hands this card to somebody. They grab this card with a bunch of other cards, they put it in their wallet, take their wallet home, you know, come out, pull the ball of cards out. Yeah, seth was a pretty good dude, I can't miss it All right. Yep, he's a cool guy. So, yeah, let me put these over here. So he puts them over here on his little table by his bed or something at his office, yep, and then two weeks go by, never call Seth, never talk to Seth.

Speaker 3:

A month goes by. He looks at the stack of cards. He's like because he's tired of looking at stuff on his desk like, oh yeah, okay, seth, oh, I gotta call him, I gotta call him, but I'm gonna call him, but I'm gonna put him in this in the drawer. So then he puts Seth in the drawer. So now Seth's in the drawer. Okay, well, that's great. Seth's in the drawer Six months down the road, stack of ins and cards. Well, I don't even remember who Seth is and or I'm tired of looking at all these stack of cards that I don't know.

Speaker 1:

He's narrating my life story here.

Speaker 3:

So now Seth goes like or Seth's card goes like this, in the trash. Can you know what I'm saying? Yep, and so that's why I don't. I'm not a huge fan, but if you're in a pinch and people don't want to use their phone or things like that, I mean it is something. So do you get some margin of return? I'm sure you get something.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

But that's not my favorite. Now, obviously, with us being you know me being part of the Dot program, I mean it's a little better. In my opinion, it looks very similar to a card Not sponsored by Dot.

Speaker 1:

This episode has not been sponsored by Dot. They should sponsor us.

Speaker 3:

But I like it because there's a QR code on the back. This is a tap card, so any phone newer phone can tap it. If they can't, they just scan the QR code. Well, it goes right to my page or to my Dot page and that is got all. I can put so much more on a Dot or on a digital card than I can on one of these. Yeah, if you put all the information I have on my Dot on this card, I mean she'd be full.

Speaker 2:

And no one could read it. No one could read it.

Speaker 3:

So it just allows for you and there's direct links to social media.

Speaker 1:

And doesn't put your information in their contact list too. You can download it Usually, yeah.

Speaker 3:

So even if they just hit download when you're right there and you have them download it Nine times out of 10. Not nine, I don't know what the stats is, I'm just saying Sounds good, if you were looking to say, for example, me, you came at me, you scan my card, you say that contact. Six months down the road, a year down the road, you said man, I met this personal trainer. Right, I have no idea where I put his card. Is what would happen if he remembered me in a year? But would he or she say you know what? Yeah, I put his contact information in my phone. So then when he goes to the search and types in personal trainer, anything in his contacts or on his feed or on his phone that says personal training in, it is gonna pop up and I would be one of the contacts that would pop up in that. So it allows for you a search feature on your phone.

Speaker 2:

So it really is the way of the future, not only that, but in addition, a beneficial addition to that, what you said is when the person downloads onto their phone the contact information, then it has the name and usually the picture that you choose to put on there and everything.

Speaker 2:

So when you call them back, if you were to call them in a month or whatever, you would pop your picture up and your name and everything and they'd be like, oh yeah, I remember that person, I'll pick it up Because, with all the telemarketers and everything flooding Google's phones, that's true. If they didn't put your business card in properly, then they'll have no idea who you are.

Speaker 1:

Yeah that's true, yeah, so yeah, that's what I mean.

Speaker 3:

And then let's just be honest, young kids are gonna go straight to Instagram or something like that, so it's on there they can tap it, they can follow us right through this card and you don't have to share. Well, my Instagram is FitBuddy's Unlimited or FitBuddy's Hampton Roads or FitBuddy's Online or FitBuddy's.

Speaker 1:

Don't forget the hashtag and the blah, blah, blah. So. But all of that is on here.

Speaker 3:

So whatever they wanna follow, they can. They can choose, pick and choose, so it makes it kinda nice. So that's why my thing is it just it depends If you're in a third world country. Maybe a business card is the way to go you know what I mean. Cause they may still have rotary phones or something. Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 1:

I mean not really rotary phones, but you know what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3:

They're gonna have the high tech cell phones that we have here in the US.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so Well, I mean, and this is, I mean that is too. They're both very low output options for business.

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, you know the low cost.

Speaker 1:

The low cost. It's not some expensive option either one.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Or is it?

Speaker 3:

These are well, I guess it's relative.

Speaker 2:

Well, yeah, I mean, they're about what? $30 for a dot card.

Speaker 3:

Not ours cause. Ours are custom-loaded. Oh, okay, but yes if you get a dot card that's not custom-loaded, they are about 30 to 50 bucks.

Speaker 1:

For how many?

Speaker 3:

Just for a card.

Speaker 1:

For a card okay.

Speaker 3:

So it is cheaper than buying a box of cards If you're buying a thousand or something like that, or 500.

Speaker 2:

Also, if you consider the percentages, I mean, I would say you're about 50% higher chance of somebody contacting you back with that right versus a regular business card.

Speaker 3:

So if you weigh that out, it's probably the same price or less, Probably much more cost effective.

Speaker 1:

Now is that the QR code you use on the building as well if you have it in the windows.

Speaker 3:

No, no, this is QR code. That goes my personal contact. Oh, gotcha, so it's based on me, so that's like I said, that's kind of nice, you know, and these are not like. I mean, it's not, it's a plastic card, like you have a credit card.

Speaker 1:

Right, so yeah.

Speaker 3:

So that's what the material this is made of, versus a card like this if you put it in your wallet, it's gonna get chewed up, right, yeah, not that these can't get scratches and stuff on them, because they can, but they get chewed up big time, yeah, so.

Speaker 2:

Well, and Seth found out an interesting detail online earlier. What was it about business card history?

Speaker 1:

Oh, okay, yeah, that, um, let me pull it off my phone. Okay, I can't remember that the first business card was in China. In the 15th century 15th century for aristocrats and royals.

Speaker 3:

That's how dang dude, I know this. You really did remember and remember. I just I know these things Just off the top of your head, off the top of my cuff. You're amazing, edible.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, you rock dude.

Speaker 2:

So yeah, I would agree. I think business cards are something that are a good thing, but, like you said, they've evolved some and I think with everything, with technology, with everything else, business cards are the same. You kind of have to move along with it. So in some situations that's going to be better. Like my parents, like Seth's and my parents, they would not do that type of card. They're old school. Well, people prefer to take that card too.

Speaker 3:

I'll tell you that, oh, I'm sure.

Speaker 1:

When I go like this up to their phone they're like try to grab it.

Speaker 3:

I'm like no, no, no, no, no, no, you just tapped it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah Right. So yeah, I mean, I guess it depends on the person you're working with too. I mean, if I would advise somebody to have both types in their wallet.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I mean that's. It's not that expensive. I get 500 cards or even 100 cards.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. So, yeah, I do like the dot option now. Yeah, how much does it cost to customize, like put a logo on it? Do you remember?

Speaker 3:

We bought like 10 of them. You remember the?

Speaker 1:

15th century Chinese origins of business cards, but not how much.

Speaker 3:

Well, because, jose, usually he managed this, so he took care of the cost of it.

Speaker 2:

Jose is the tech guy, so so, yeah, so I don't know what that was. So what you're saying is he'd have to call a friend. Yeah, he had to call a friend.

Speaker 1:

Call a text a friend. What do you think? I know, I agree, I think there's a place for both of them. But yeah, you're right. Right, Evolving with the changes, like with dot, is probably wise for business. But business cards, I mean, a lot of people are still school and they just they want something in their hand to take with them. We found that at the market. I mean, some people want to want to take it.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Take a card. It's not as much as it used to be, though.

Speaker 2:

No, I agree with you.

Speaker 1:

I mean, I have a stack of business cards like this on my desk. I couldn't even tell you who's in it, except for the top blood it's a chef.

Speaker 2:

When the newer chefs I've spoken with. So that's all I know.

Speaker 3:

So and we're eco-friendly.

Speaker 2:

That's true too, going green Okay.

Speaker 1:

Except it's black and plastic.

Speaker 3:

But it's, one.

Speaker 1:

You're not killing a tree.

Speaker 2:

Not thousands of cards you go through, true Thousands of cards that other people will be throwing away.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 3:

Right, that is true. To end up in the landfill, yeah.

Speaker 1:

That is true.

Speaker 2:

See, we're doing our part to go green. So are you going to do your part and go green and use a dot card, or do you still use business cards at all? What do you think? Let us know in the comments. Yep, till next time.
