00:00 What Are The Essentials In A Trail Mix
00:16 Intro
00:31 Are There Trail Mix Ingredients That Are A Must?

Speaker 2:

All right what are the?

Speaker 1:

essentials in a trail mix. Welcome to next time. Oh, that was so good.

Speaker 2:

Oh, that was great. Try it again. That was great, Ted. All right, let's try again, okay.

Speaker 1:

What are the essentials in a trail mix? Welcome to next time.

Speaker 3:

Welcome to the FitLife show, where we share tips and tricks on fitness, food, family and fun. All right, trail mixes. Are there ingredients that you feel just have to be in the trail mix? Otherwise, you just don't want it, because I have staples for trail mixes.

Speaker 2:

And first off, I think we should. I've had trail mix here, yeah what was your problem?

Speaker 1:

No problem.

Speaker 2:

I mean we should have trail mix that we could just kind of nibble on, so we could showcase Well we could.

Speaker 1:

George, you're a complainer, so you're saying so, next week we should have a trail mix taste test to see which ones we like there you go there you go See, I was thinking ahead.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so for me, I don't like pumpkin seeds.

Speaker 1:

Agreed, oh amen, so agree, and they put pumpkin seeds in all trail mixes Pretty much In raw sunflower seeds. I don't like either.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I don't like roasted sunflower seeds either.

Speaker 2:

I like sunflower seeds.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't mind if they're roasted. Yeah, they're roasted, salted up on her.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, buddy, yeah, so, but I do like pistachios. Oh, yes, so I like pistachios, but again.

Speaker 1:

I think in that sorry, instead are good to have in a trail mix because it has the oils and the fats and the yeah yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so trail mix. You know you got to have something sweet in it. Yeah, With the savory. But you know, usually I'm getting like almonds in there. You know almonds are pretty good. I don't really like like the bitter ones, like walnuts no, or kind of bitter, yeah, I don't like pecans.

Speaker 3:

I actually don't like pecans in anything really.

Speaker 2:

See, I love pecans.

Speaker 1:

I don't get it, dude pecans are. I'm allergic to walnuts, so walnuts are out.

Speaker 2:

Pecans are banging, so yeah, I like pecans.

Speaker 1:

There's a pecan or pecan. Don't start this.

Speaker 2:

Pecan, pecan.

Speaker 3:

That's for you, Tanya.

Speaker 1:

Still remember that episode. Huh yeah, that was awesome, Awesome.

Speaker 2:

Her eating a mayonnaise. That was so awesome. Pecan, pecan, not pecan.

Speaker 1:

I mean, I like dried fruit. I'm chocolate, is I like in it too?

Speaker 2:

like a little imminent or something.

Speaker 1:

But if you're running or you're outside, you know how that possibly a bit melting.

Speaker 2:

So fruit is usually a better option. Yeah, okay, raisins, cranberries, which one?

Speaker 3:

Between the two raisins.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 3:

All right Okay.

Speaker 2:

White or whatever normal raisins are. So either like the golden raisins, oh golden Golden are usually the best.

Speaker 3:

There's actually one that is the best, and it's jumbo red.

Speaker 1:

Jumbo red. He likes the jumbo red.

Speaker 3:

Those are the absolute best raisins yeah.

Speaker 2:

I have to try it.

Speaker 3:

I don't know if I like that they're like a goldish pink color.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'd say the dark ones. So I just think I like the flavor of them better. I like the yellows, but I prefer the other ones. Are better in the trail mix, the dark ones.

Speaker 2:

I think I like you, I think I like, the more the golden.

Speaker 1:

Really.

Speaker 3:

How about coconut. Do you like coconut?

Speaker 1:

I'm not a fan because if you're running or something, I tend to get stuck in my throat. That's why I like the coconut chunks versus the shredded, I'm still not a fan of that in trail mix. How about raisins?

Speaker 3:

Covered raisins, I'm plain.

Speaker 2:

I'm plain on that stuff I like.

Speaker 1:

So you like the sweet and salty combo.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I like having that. Like you said, if there's an opportunity to put some chocolate in there, definitely gonna put some chocolate in there. Yeah, but obviously if you're out and about you don't want a bunch of chocolate, Right, you know. But I'm honestly I do like cashews. I don't think that they go well with my body, like I think I'm got an allergy slightly to them or something.

Speaker 3:

Okay, I've never heard of a legit of cashews, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Not a bad. Mine's more like a skin kind of allergy, Like I tend to like break out, like in my face, almost like eczema or something. Oh wow, If I have to, because when I go on like a ketogenic diet and I do more protein and fats, you know I'll eat nuts because I got a lot of fat in them so and I tend to stick with the. I like the cashews. Well, then my face kind of breaks out or whatever. So I don't really know, that's just something that I feel like.

Speaker 1:

But I like cashews, yeah, so do you agree, like a lot of people don't like peanuts in their trail mix. Do you like peanuts in your trail mix? So do you like more of the mixed nuts?

Speaker 2:

If I'm. Well, let's let's clarify If there's M&Ms in it. I love a salted, salty peanut with a sweet M&M, you know. So in that kind of trail mix I could definitely do it. But if I'm going on a hike or something like that, I'm probably not going to put peanuts in there, okay, and if I do, I want them like lightly salted.

Speaker 3:

Hmm, okay, because oh, because it'll dry your mouth out.

Speaker 2:

Well, there's just so much salt on the peanut a lot of times oh okay, yeah, that makes sense. So, and again, even when it's sweet in there, it's fine because it kind of like Balances. Yeah balances this really super salty. Yeah, that makes sense.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so where other like don'ts in trail mix for you, I would you like tropical fruit in your stuff, like dried pineapple or anything like that.

Speaker 2:

Okay, I don't. You're like more like the planes. I'm a very basic Okay, and we like don't do it enough, but I like to. We like to make our own. Yeah, you know what I mean. That way you can buy it bulk, kind of make your own.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, really great place for that is netscom. They have some really good stuff on there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, okay, for trail mixing. Yeah, that's true, they do for trail mixing.

Speaker 2:

Mixing Okay.

Speaker 1:

And trail mixing.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so I don't. It's an herb, right, it's an ax yeah.

Speaker 2:

I don't need the tropical fruit and all that kind of stuff. And then you know, you've seen like people do like what is it like? Checks and yeah, yeah and some of those things where they're throwing Cheetos and all kinds of party mixes or whatever. You know what I'm saying, like they're like.

Speaker 1:

I guess, you're calling party mixes. I found that like if you were. If you have to like, refrigerate your trail mix or something that type of stuff. They get stale fast.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

You know, it disintegrates really quickly or gets soggy.

Speaker 3:

I think there's also a difference between like trail mix that you have at a party or whatever and trail mix that you take for work or for that type of thing.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 3:

Because if you're doing it for a party, then yeah, you can have stuff in there like the Cheetos or you know things like that. But if you're trying to have it for like an extended period of time storage, it seems like that just are not gonna be good after a couple of days. That's true.

Speaker 2:

If you've ever had trail mix, that's kind of like a trail mix, I guess you could call it with like popcorn in it.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

And usually the popcorn is like chocolate drizzle or something like that.

Speaker 1:

Oh man, that's like a dessert snack, that's kind of trail mix. I like eating that Jenga, I like it best with the caramel on it. Okay, yeah, that's the best. And you I mean you've had major in trail mix before when you put on beef jerky in it.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

That's actually. No, that's like that beef jerky.

Speaker 3:

That's actually really good, I think, because it's the salty and it has that shell state. Yeah, you can do it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's true, it's really good so you can put it in a little baggie and take it on a hike or whatever. Yeah, yeah, no that's not a bad. I've never tried it, but that sounds like it could be good, yeah especially if you do the pepper on beef jerky, because they'll have that extra spice yeah that's really good. Yeah, and then you get a little bit of sweet with some raisins or whatever you're going to use for the sweeter side of things.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that one's good with the peanuts and the raisins because it has the salty sweet and the smoky, yeah.

Speaker 3:

another thing I like is dried strawberries. That's one of my favorite fruits to put in trail mixes.

Speaker 2:

Really, I've never tried dried strawberries in a trail mix.

Speaker 1:

I like dried strawberries but never tried it in a trail mix. Yeah, it gives. Tried some very weird things in trail mix that we made yeah, even wasabi peas.

Speaker 2:

I do not like wasabi peas.

Speaker 3:

You don't like them period, or you just don't like them in oh period. Is it because of the wasabi or the pea?

Speaker 2:

Probably the wasabi. Okay, I like wasabi on my sushi, but I mix it with all the ginger and soy sauce and all that stuff.

Speaker 1:

So yeah, I am not a wasabi fan at all, I just eat the ginger.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, he thinks it tastes like dirt. So what?

Speaker 2:

about? What about? Let's jump into this. What about wasabi microgreens?

Speaker 1:

I don't particularly like those either. They're just too strong.

Speaker 3:

I like them with something by themselves Too strong, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2:

So see how they brought that in. I did you know mini acres farm here, just FYI in case you guys didn't know that.

Speaker 1:

Cross promoting.

Speaker 3:

Good segue.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 3:

I think they got it.

Speaker 1:

You went chill like Okay, All right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so trail mix. What do you have in your trail mix?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's not your ideas, I'm just kidding.

Speaker 2:

So I took your slender.

Speaker 3:

Different and usual. What do you like in?

Speaker 1:

it. Do you agree with the dark?

Speaker 2:

raisin, the dark raisin or light raisin.

Speaker 1:

Let us know what you think. Or if you think Kibb's crazy put wasabi peas and jerky in his trail mix, which I'm not, because it's awesome, or what's the craziest thing that? You find in your jerky, because I think a lot of people make their own jerky, you know, or jerky. Trail mix.

Speaker 3:

Most people just run over a deer and make their own jerky. That's right.

Speaker 2:

Well, I think trail mix is like. The problem with trail mix that I will say before we end this episode is it's very calorie dense.

Speaker 3:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

Very, very careful with trail mix. Yeah, because if you're trying to eat healthy, then you can very quickly over consume on calories, it's true, and there's also a factor that your body can only it really doesn't process nuts in general, right. So I don't know if you've looked at your poop after a nice good trail mix Not often. Okay, if you look at your poop after a nice good trail mix, you're going to see some of them same nuts coming out.

Speaker 3:

Yeah that's true, yeah.

Speaker 2:

You know, I mean because your body, they can't break that down. And so really there's different theories of thought on how much calories you actually get from a nut.

Speaker 1:

So you probably get more like the fat and the stuff instead of like the essential stuff.

Speaker 2:

So basically, your intestines are what absorb all the nutrient, right, Right. So if they're not being absorbed from, because it's not breaking down the nut itself, I don't know how much of even that you get. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, because it's like pressing a nut. You know we're to get the oil out of it, right, press the nut. Well, if you're, we're not even really. I mean, how much are you really getting out of it? I mean, I don't know.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I don't know that for sure, but it makes sense. I feel like a lot of those calories are not absorbed from those nuts. So I think you have to be careful on how much nuts you have One, because you know they are so high in calories and things of that nature, but also two, you just you know you've heard of diberticulitis. Yeah, yeah and sometimes people develop that from eating to nuts.

Speaker 1:

So just be cognizant of you, know your stomach and how you feel and maybe you can you know if you make a trial mix or try trial trial mix before you go on a high-carcinoline. So if you do have an issue, then you know, you're aware of it.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and to that two points. One don't just throw something in there that you've never tried on its own before.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 3:

You know, like I'm allergic to mango in most forms, so I want to be sure that I test all the ingredients first before I throw them all together and then try it on the road and I'm like, oh, I'm allergic to something that's in here, you know.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, but I'll stab you.

Speaker 3:

I know you've really wanted to stab me with an epi pin for a very long time.

Speaker 1:

Oh an epi pin.

Speaker 3:

Yes, yeah, what did you?

Speaker 1:

say he was talking about. I said a pin. I didn't know what you were talking about. Look at where his mind's at.

Speaker 2:

I'm not trying to kill the man, I'm trying to save his life, okay and the second point too is is measuring stuff out.

Speaker 3:

Yeah because that's one thing. That's when Seth and I did trail mixes. We would always get all the ingredients together. We would throw them into a metal bowl, mix them all together and then measure it out into small Ziploc bags. So portion control, Portion control yeah because if you don't, I mean I could have eaten. I just kept eating and kept eating. Yeah, so unless you actually put and get all your ingredients together and mix it all up and put it into correct portions, you're going to overeat. Oh yeah, most definitely.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's the best complaint we don't at our house. If that's stuff like my wife can just eat a little bit, I cannot. I eat until I'm like either sick or full and I can't have any more, and then I still try to like.

Speaker 1:

if there's only a little bit left, then I'm trying to finish it up, right, you don't want to waste it or have to go back to the fridge. Yeah, I'm not going to the back In the back. I'm just geez.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so then you overeat.

Speaker 1:

So when it's a baggy, it's a simple Been there Done by.

Speaker 2:

All right, that's all I can have, unless you got a bunch of baggies and then you're like well, I have one more baggy Right. Yeah. I don't know if you guys find this if you ever do this or not, but I have been known that in my own house I sneak. Oh, you know what I mean. Do you guys ever do that?

Speaker 1:

Sneak, sneak. What Well, our problem now is? We have a dog.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

And if she hears, if Molly hears a crinkle or a crunch of anything, you hear her little nails go into the kitchen. Where we are is like and she says you're like wow.

Speaker 3:

What do you got? Didn't get away with that, yeah.

Speaker 1:

So, yes, we do sneak.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, because I'll be like. I mean, I bought the food Right. Right, You're an adult and I'm an adult. And I find myself sneaky sometimes. Food and then I get caught and I'm like you feel guilty. I feel guilty, but my kids are my wife. They don't care Right.

Speaker 3:

You're not like oh, dad, you got that.

Speaker 2:

You know, I'm like so I bring it on myself. I'm like I think it's my childhood.

Speaker 3:

I'm like not my childhood. There you go.

Speaker 2:

You know where I would sneak and put cereal next to my bed full boxes of cereal and I would eat that Okay.

Speaker 1:

I don't think I ever did that.

Speaker 2:

They would find boxes, empty boxes of cereal in my, in my beside my bed as a child, but it's because they starved me. I ain't nothing so parental neglect, I'm just kidding. I'm totally kidding, but but yeah, so I would do that, for sure, yeah, and I used to sneak food all the time.

Speaker 2:

So I think that's what we're really truly what it's from. Not that they did that, but I was considered husky and you know so, and really husky back then is like a skinny person today. Yeah, I mean truly, yeah, it is yeah, so yeah. So I definitely was a sneaker, so so portion control.

Speaker 3:

Yes, yes, hide those little baggies.

Speaker 1:

Have a responsible person hide them for you and give them to you when you're, no matter what.

Speaker 3:

I say don't tell me where it is.

Speaker 2:

That's right, that's right.

Speaker 3:

All right.

Speaker 2:

Till next time.

Speaker 1:
